Malaria Desk

The LUCSA Malaria Program is addressing the challenges of malaria in southern Africa in a number of ways. In partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, LUCSA has begun working with its members churches in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia to deal with this deadly disease. Together with other faith-based organizations, NGOs, and governments within the sub-region, we are working to greatly reduce malaria infections and deaths in Southern Africa. Through a comprehensive strategy that includes education, the distribution of resources, the development of economic sustainability projects, and environmental assessments we are working to mitigate and prevent the disease on various levels. This approach will ensure the organizational development of member churches, including strengthening and putting relevant systems and structures in place to guarantee timely and quality results.

The strategy starts by engaging our LUCSA member churches to holistically address malaria as a disease intensified by poverty as well as incorporating strategies for prevention, control, treatment, and environmental management. LUCSA is integrating malaria education and capacity building into existing LUCSA program implementation, including HIV & AIDS and TB, for comprehensive and sustainable community development.

LUCSA is working with member churches and their communities to identify the most vulnerable population groups including pregnant women and children under 5 years old. By targeting these groups LUCSA’s Malaria Field Officers can best assess the needs of each region, resulting in a strategic implementation of resources. These include the facilitation of educational materials within member churches and their communities, the distribution of long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets (LLINs) and educating recipients on how to properly use them, the development of economically sustainable projects to generate local income, and addressing the environmental causes that create the breeding grounds of the mosquitos that carry the disease.

Working along side other organizations and governments ensures that LUCSA’s Malaria Program won’t duplicate efforts in certain areas, but instead focus on the areas where needs are not yet being met. A reduction in the overlapping of resources will help LUCSA and others meet our goals together at an accelerated rate that is both strategically and financially sound.

Help us today by making a donation to our partners at the ELCA Malaria Campaign by clicking here. For as little as 10 USD you can provide one LLINs net to protect a family from malaria.
